A recent survey shows Indians showing decreased interest in working abroad

A recent Boston Consulting Group (BCG) study reveals a significant shift in the preferences of Indian professionals seeking opportunities abroad.

The ‘International Mobility Trends’ study highlights key insights into India’s workforce dynamics and evolving global presence.

The study indicates a notable decline in the number of Indians seeking opportunities abroad, marking a shift from 78% in 2020 to 54% in 2023. However, India’s ranking as a preferred destination has risen by 6 points over the last five years, showcasing its growing appeal on the international stage.

While cities like Bengaluru and Delhi remain top choices for those seeking employment within India, their global rankings have slightly decreased. On the other hand, Ahmedabad has made its debut in the top 100 global cities list, signifying a diversification of India’s preferred work destinations.

A key finding of the analysis is the increasing interest in India as a desirable work location among individuals from various countries, particularly the UAE, Nigeria, and Kenya.

The survey also illuminates Indian workers’ shifting preferences regarding overseas employment. While the UAE was previously a top choice, countries like Australia, the US, Canada, Germany, and the UK have emerged as favoured destinations for Indian professionals seeking global opportunities.

Globally, cities like London and New York are desirable locations for work and migration. The survey emphasizes that professional progress, financial considerations, and career growth are primary motivators for individuals seeking employment abroad.

Despite the allure of overseas opportunities, the survey highlights a strong emotional attachment among Indian respondents to their country, with 59% expressing unwillingness to relocate. India’s significant diaspora, comprising NRIs, PIOs, and OCIs, reflects its status as a major contributor to the global workforce, with millions migrating overseas annually.
