This is how empty bottles can get you a free ride in Abu Dhabi

In a unique initiative called 'Points for Plastic Bus Tariff,' launched by Abu Dhabi's Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) in March, public bus riders can exchange plastic bottles for points that cover their bus fare.

Aiming to promote sustainability, this initiative collaborates with ITC, the Environment Agency Abu Dhabi (EAD), and Tadweer, the Abu Dhabi Waste Management Centre.

Commuters can deposit empty plastic bottles at Abu Dhabi’s Central Bus Station to collect points. For small bottles (600 ml or less), one point is earned, while larger bottles give two points. Each point is worth ten fils, meaning 10 points will knock Dh1 off your next bus fare. These points are added directly to the rider’s Hafilat bus card, which is then scanned on the bus to apply the points toward the fare automatically.

The initiative, currently in its first phase, is expected to expand to other areas of the Emirate, giving more people the chance to save money while helping the planet.
